Wuhan, abbreviated as "Han", also known as  "Jiangcheng", is a prefecture-level city and capital of Hubei province, the only sub-provincial city and mega-city in the six central provinces, the central city of central China as approved by the State Council, a national historical and cultural city, an international comprehensive transportation hub city, the economic center, science and technology innovation center, commerce and logistics center, foreign communication center and the shipping center in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River. It is also the economic center, science and technology innovation center, trade and logistics center, foreign communication center, shipping center in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, and the comprehensive innovation and reform pilot zone in central China.

Wuhan is located in the eastern part of the Jianghan Plain and the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, where the Yangtze River and its largest tributary, the Han River, meet, forming a pattern of three towns in Wuhan (Wuchang, Hankou, and Hanyang) separated by the river. The city has long stretches of rivers and lakes and harbors, and the watershed accounts for one-fourth of the total area of the city, which is rated as an international wetland city. As the economic and geographic center of China, Wuhan is known as “the thoroughfare of nine provinces”, and is the largest inland land, water and air transportation hub in China, with its high-speed rail network radiating half of China and direct flights to five continents.

Wuhan is the important birthplace of Chu culture, has been the military and commercial town of southern China since the Spring and Autumn Period and the Warring States Period, and became the provincial capital of Huguang Province in the Yuan Dynasty, and was regarded as “the first prosperous place in Chu” and one of the “Four Gatherings of the World” in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. In the late Qing Dynasty, the opening of Hankou and the foreign affairs movement started the modernization process of Wuhan, making it an important economic center of modern China.
